Wood Turning

I have always had an interest in making things. Early in my adult life I started making furniture for our home. I soon filled our home and started making items for friends and family. After several years of honing my skills and knowledge in woodworking, I opened a part time business. For several years I crafted custom furniture and cabinets out of my garage. When I retired from my full time job at AECL, I built a shop at the industrial park in Pinawa and opened a full-time cabinet shop. After eight years of operation I decided to end the business so I could spend more time with some of my other interests. Although I was no longer interested in operating a business I still wanted to continue woodworking in some manner. Woodturning turned out to be the perfect fit.

When I start a turning project I only have a vague idea of what I am going to make. The design is created on the go with no prescribed direction. Removing material and adding details, a form is created. I try to create a form which best shows the natural characteristics and beauty of the wood I am using. After creating an item I sometimes will enhance the project by wood burning, carving or painting. Most of the wood I use is rescued from blown down trees and tree removal services. I find it very satisfying creating a work of art from something that would normally be destined for the landfill or burned in a fire pit.
