Wood Carving

In 2005, my brother, a renowned artist on Vancouver Island, gave me a carving knife and instructions on carving a cowboy boot. Then came classes in bird and animal carving. A three day class in cottonwood bark carving had me hooked! Carvings of whimsical houses, trees, lighthouses, fridge magnets, Christmas tree ornaments, or all combined “in the round” carvings have my imagination fired up.

I carve with two great groups: “Catfish Carvers” in Selkirk and “Bear Country Carvers” in Lac u Bonnet. I have competed at the Prairie Canada Carving Championship in Winnipeg, MB and at the Red River Valley Woodcarvers Competition and Exhibition in Fargo, ND, with ribbons in Novice, Intermediate, and Open levels.

Recent carving classes with Rick Jensen, noted bark carver and author, have broadened my knowledge and, hopefully, my carvings skills. Carving for me is so satisfying and an excellent stress reliever. The outside world tends to disappear when I carve.
